May 1879 - February 1946

Born James Jack White, Co. Antrim 1879. Originally joined Gordan Highlanders in 1899. Fought in Boer war until 1901. While there refused to shoot a young Boer soldier who had been captured. Spent three years as Aide de Camp to Governor of Gibraltar. Served in India before returning to Europe. Resigned his commision in 1907. Would later become a teacher in Bohemia and Canada. Objected to the formation of the Ulster Volunteers in 1912 and returned to Ireland. Originally a lobbier of Home Rule he moved to Dublin in 1913 and met James Larkin and James Connolly. He reportedly suggested the idea of the Civic League, which would later become the Irish Citizen Army. He drilled them as best he could but after a dispute with Larkin he resigned and then joined the Irish Volunteers. He then organised brigades in Derry and Tyrone. In 1914 he drove an ambulance to France to help the wounded from WWI. Soon after he sought refuge with Maud Gonne as he was suspected of helping Roger Casement, who was attempting to raise an Irish Brigade from soliers in the british army. He attempted to return to Ireland in 1916 to assist with the Rising but was instead imprisoned for inciting a Welsh miner strike. Appointed chairman of Irish Worker's League in the 1920's.
