died 10 June, 1923

Dr. Francis Ferran. Cmmdt. 4th battalion North Mayo Brigade. Was Officer Commanding at foxford when the RIC were fired upon, May 1921. Lack of arms and ammunition did not help and several volunteers were captured. The same month he stood in the general election in East Mayo and was elected un - opposed. During the elections in 1922 he took the anti - treaty side. He was removed as medical officer in East Mayo in 1923 and sent to The Curragh internment camp. He died of pneumonia while he was inside. He is buried in the Republican plot at Glasnevin Cemetary in Dublin.
