Born in Kiltimagh, Co. Mayo. Captain and Vice Cmmdt. of 3rd Battalion, East Mayo Brigade. Member of Irish Volunteers from 1915, in 1917 he helped to organise events to raise money for the dependants of Volunteers. Took part in numerous raids for arms. Also assisted local people to help them avoid being evicted by british forces. Through the early 1920's he took part in a number of raids on RIC barracks as well as the customs box in East Mayo. In May 1920 he was injured in an attack on the barracks at Bohola. He and Sean Corcoran were so badly injured that some of their comrades thought they should be killed to put them out of their misery. They were taken to hospital instead and eventually recovered.
