Born in Cork, he joined the british army and served in mesopotamia. Joined Irish volunteers upon return to Ireland. He led the west Cork flying column in an ambush on two lorry loads of british auxileries. 3 IRA men were killed in the attack. 17 of 18 auxileries were killed. It was reported by the british that many of the dead suffered extremely grievous injuries after death. In 1921 he successfully led an ambush on a british column of 9 lorries.
