1879 - Oct. 25th 1920

Publisher of a weekly paper "Fianna Fail" ("soldiers of destiny") which was suppressed after 11 issues. Founded Cork brigade of Irish Volunteers in 1913. Interned in gaol from April to December 1916. In Feb. 1917 was deported from Ireland until June of the same year. In november was arrested again in Cork for wearing an IRA uniform. Immediately went on 3 day hunger strike and was released. Arrested again in Dublin in March, 1918 and held in multiple gaols until his release in September. Was re-arrested and held in Lincoln Gaol. Released in March 1919. Was elected to Lord Mayor of Cork after the assassination of Thomas McCurtain. He was arrested for the last time on 12 August, 1920. Went on hunger strike again, in protest of british interference with elected civic duties, and stayed on it for 73 days until his death on 25 October, 1920. In 1921 his play"The Revolutionist" was produced at the famous Abbey Theatre in Dublin. His last words were "I want you to bear witness that I die as a soldier of the Irish Republic." His book "Principles of Freedom" was published posthumously in 1921.
