IRB member from Longford. Chosen to represent sinn Fein in by - election while a prisoner at lewes gaol where he was serving time for his part in the 1916 rebellion. Did not want to do so due to his contempt for parliament. He was backed by the majority of his fellow prisoners but Michael Collins put his name in anyway. He won by thirty-eight votes.
