1884 - 1967

 

Born in Dublin. Joined Daughters of Erin 1903. In 1909 helped Constance Markievicz found Na Fianna Eireann. Imprisoned with Countess Markievicz after protest of george V visit to Dublin in 1911. In September of same year became a founder member of Irish Women Workers Union. Joined James Connolly's Irish Citizens Army in 1913. Took part in the attack on Dublin Castle during the Dublin Rising in 1916. Opposed Anglo-Irish treaty in 1921. Assisted the Republican side during the Civil War. Was elected President of Irish Tade Union Congress. IN 1930's was an executive for Saor Eire as well as the League Against Imperialism.

Possibly one of the most important of the many great things she did for Ireland was to convince James Connolly to return to Ireland from America in 1907. He came back to organise the workers into trade unions and became a driving force in the continuing struggle for Irish Freedom.
