Born and educated in Belfast. He joined the Irish Volunteers in 1914. Was subsequently captured and held in Reading Gaol in england. While there collaborated with others on a small pamphlet to be cirulated among the prisoners called "The Book of Cells". In this book he had written and composed the song "Cumann na mBan".
