9 November, 1893 - 9 April, 1923

Born in Mitchelstown, Ireland. Became a passionate reader of Irish History. After witnessing events of british military oppression after the 1916 Easter Rising he decided to do his part to help his people. He would make his mark as he rose to the position of Commdt. Cork number 2 Brigade. Later He would be Commdt. of First Southern Division. Eventually he Joined the IRA Supreme Council and became Chief of Staff. Opponent of 1921 treaty which led to the illegal partition of Ireland. He wanted only a unified 32 County Ireland. He disagreed with the seizure of the Four Courts in Dublin by his fellows in the anti - treaty forces, but he did rejoin the garrison there in 1922. In 1923 he and 6 comrades were trapped by free state forces in the Knockmealdown mountains. In an attempt to circumvent the pursuers, he was shot and fatally wounded. He ordered his fellows to go on and complete the mission, which meant leaving him behind. They did what he ordered and he was captured. He died that same evening. His leadership was instrumental in opposition to the illegal partition of his homeland. He is still a hero to those who fight for the same ends to this day.
